Obituary

Ann Betterton, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, in Horn Lake, Mississippi. Born on July 13, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee, Ann entered this world with a unique sparkle, famously sharing with everyone that she was the same age as her sister for exactly thirteen days—a whimsical detail that reflected her joyful spirit and love for storytelling.

From a young age, Ann was grounded in faith, having been baptized early in life, a foundation that carried her through all of her days with grace and strength. She was the beloved daughter of the late Bennie and Margaret Beaver and grew up among siblings Sheila James, Bennie Beaver, Jr., Linda Walston, Mary Gould, Robert Beaver, Dorothy Hatcher, and Freddie Beaver. Her family remembers her as the heart of every gathering, a woman who never met a stranger and always welcomed others with open arms, much like her father did.

Ann was a warm and vibrant soul, known far and wide as "everyone’s mother and nanny." She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel loved and cared for, whether family or friend. Children's laughter followed her wherever she went, and to many of her friends’ children, she was lovingly known simply as “Nanny.” Her home was a place where gatherings blossomed, especially during holidays, where food, laughter, and love were abundant. Ann’s culinary skills were legendary—her meatloaf, a “mean” recipe as many fondly described, was a signature dish that brought everyone back to her table again and again.

A woman of genuine warmth and honesty, Ann embraced all facets of life. Her family loved everything about her, even when she was a bit stern or “mean,” as they would say with twinkling eyes and affection. She carried a passion for wrestling, never missing a match, and had a penchant for cooking shows and game shows, finding joy in the simple pleasures of entertainment.

Ann's proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren, the living proof of her nurturing and unwavering devotion. She is survived by her beloved children Darla (Jason) Holland, Debbie (Larry) Tillery, Johnny Swinford, and Linda (John) Jackson, Don Betterton; grandchildren Makayla, Isabella, and Alexander Holland, Ashley Hall, Tammy Copen, Brandon Tillery, Elizabeth Harris, Shannon and Patrick Nelson, Colton Betterton, Ashley and Tori Mize; and a host of wonderful great-grandchildren including Maci Harris, Brantley Hinckley, Gemma and James Wood, Jayden Hall, Maiya Robertson, Mackenzie and Joshua Spencer, Jaxon Betterton and Colton Betterton, Jr., Christian Russell, Christopher Butler, Sophia, Joey, and Timothy Copen. She also leaves behind siblings Linda Walston, Mary (David) Gould, Robert Beaver, Dorothy Hatcher, and Freddie (May) Beaver, as well as numerous other family members and dear friends who will miss her dearly.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents Bennie and Margaret Beaver, her spouse Robert Glen Betterton, her children Dolores and Bobby Betterton, siblings Sheila James and Bennie Beaver, Jr., and grandchild Shandra Betterton.

Surrounded by family in the final moments of her life, Ann’s passing is mourned deeply yet remembered with immense gratitude and love. She was a beacon of warmth and kindness whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew her. Though she has departed from this earthly home, the love she sowed and the memories she created will forever be a guiding light for generations to come.

Ann Betterton’s legacy is one of love, family, and the joyful spirit of a woman who was truly loved by all. Her life was a beautiful mosaic of devotion, strength, and heart—a woman who, through quiet acts and fierce love, changed the world for those who were lucky enough to call her their Nanny, their mother, their friend. She will be forever missed, forever treasured, and forever remembered.
