Buford "BJ" Junior Whitman, known to all as BJ, passed away on June 26, 2026. He was born in Henderson, Tennessee on July 27, 1940, and throughout his 85 years, he lived a life full of purpose, love, and unmistakable character.
BJ’s extraordinary story begins with his deep Tennessee roots, where his sense of family, friendship, and commitment were first shaped. He became a proud Army veteran, serving his country bravely and cherishing that service all his life. That loyalty and pride would echo through everything he touched, from his professional ventures to his relationships with friends and family.
Professionally, BJ was known as a barber and a gifted musician. More than just titles, these roles were his passions. He owned and operated his own barber shop in Horn Lake, MS for an incredible 47 years—a record of dedication that earned his shop the distinction of being the oldest business in town. His work was more than a livelihood; it was where he built lasting friendships and offered a place of connection to his community. As a Mason, BJ upheld the values of fellowship and support, contributing quietly but steadfastly to lives around him.
Music was an inseparable part of BJ’s soul. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, BJ had a rare talent for music, teaching himself to play and writing songs every day. His home was constantly filled with melodies, many of which he played with his beloved Alice. Both BJ and Alice shared a remarkable history not only as partners but as best friends, along with their late spouses. Together, they were known as the Memphis Hillbillies, bringing joy and laughter wherever their music played. Music connected BJ to so many, including the cherished memory of playing alongside Ronnie Milsap.
BJ was a collector of all things, each item a piece of a story, a memory, or a laugh—just as he was a collector of friends and experiences. He was endlessly crafty, always finding new projects and creative outlets. Behind his talents and achievements, there was always a loving heart, particularly toward his wife. He made sure Alice had everything she needed, showering her with constant care and devotion.
BJ’s family was his world. He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Whitman; his sons, Jeff Whitman and Brian Whitman; his daughter-in-law, Sonia Whitman; his son, Randy Rasberry; his daughters, Gail Rowland and Tammy McClure, and her husband, Mike McClure; as well as his brother, James Whitman. Each family member and friend holds precious memories of BJ’s unyielding support, his warmth, and his laughter. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Diane Whitman, Anna Woods and his son, Johnny Rasberry, whose memories are cherished deeply by all who loved him.
Above all else, BJ leaves behind a legacy of kindness, steadfastness, and wholehearted living. He taught those closest to him to find joy in small things, to create beauty from the ordinary, and to always show up for the ones you love.
All who wish to pay their respects and remember BJ are invited to a visitation on Wednesday July 2nd, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at Twin Oaks Funeral Home, 290 Goodman Rd E, Southaven, MS. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, and a graveside service will be held immediately afterward from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
BJ’s life was a beautiful melody—a harmony of service, creativity, and love. As those who loved him gather to remember, his spirit will continue to resonate in every song played, every story shared, and every small act of kindness inspired by his example.
