Dorothy "Dee" Leech Patterson, a cherished matriarch and beloved educator, passed away on July 24, 2025, in Southaven, Mississippi, at the age of 90. Born on March 21, 1935, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Dee dedicated her life to fostering a love of learning among young minds. After graduating from Belmont College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, she devoted her career to teaching as a kindergarten teacher at both Hope Sullivan Elementary School and Greenbrook Elementary School.
Dee was renowned for her warmth, strength, and independence—a steadfast pillar in her family and the lives of her students. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she was known to be a wonderful teacher who inspired countless children over the decades.
The memories crafted through her loving presence will forever be treasured by her family. Beach trips filled with laughter and joy punctuated her life, and her 90th birthday celebration stands as a testament to her loving spirit, surrounded by her daughters, Emmy Powell, Martha Rowan, and Beth Ayres, as well as her son, Bill Patterson, along with her 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. This gathering was not simply a milestone; it embodied the essence of her life spent advocating for and supporting her family, always ready to cheer on her grandchildren at their sports events until just a few years ago.
Dee's life was richly adorned with interests that brought her joy, from watching all types of sporting events on television to indulging in her favorite treat—Jamocha almond fudge ice cream from Baskin Robbins. She relished the camaraderie and conversation of her fellow educators, regularly meeting with her old teaching buddies for lunch, cherishing these moments of friendship and laughter.
A faithful member of Colonial Hills Church in Southaven, Dee's life was defined by her strong faith in the Lord and commitment to her family. She was fiercely proud of her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, viewing these as some of her proudest accomplishments. Though she has now joined her late husband, William Patterson, and her dear parents, J. Neil and Gladys (Burns) Leech, and her siblings Martha Andrews and J. Neil Leech, Jr., in eternal rest, her legacy of love, education, and unwavering support will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
As we reflect on the remarkable life of Dorothy "Dee" Leech Patterson, we celebrate her indelible impact on her family, her profession, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory forever serve as a guiding light of resilience, love, and devotion.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 3615 Summerwood Ln, Olive Branch, MS 38654.
