Dorothy S. Hairston

Dorothy S. Hairston, affectionately known as Dot or Meemaw, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 3, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. Born on June 25, 1926, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Dorothy’s centennial life both began and concluded with an enduring sense of warmth, faith, and devotion to those she loved.

Dorothy’s was a life marked by resilience and an unwavering work ethic. She dedicated herself wholly to whatever she put her mind to, working throughout her life with characteristic drive and determination. Those who knew Dorothy best will remember her as a woman who was not only driven and stubborn but also remarkably generous—she would do anything for others without hesitation.

A proud Christian, Dorothy was a faithful member of Longview Heights Baptist Church. Her dedication to her church family and her Sunday school class was evident in her regular attendance and heartfelt participation. Through her faith and commitment to her spiritual community, Dorothy forged many meaningful relationships that brought depth and joy to her journey.

Family was the absolute center of Dorothy's world, and her profound love for her kin was clear to all. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Sandra Mehler, whose presence and accomplishments always filled Dorothy with immense pride. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchild, Lorie (Gregg) Parham, and her beloved great-grandchildren: Jessica (Josh)Harper, Hunter Katelyn) Parham, Triston Harper, Harley Harper, Levi Parham, and Wyatt Parham. Each of them carries forward her spirit, kindness, and values.

In addition to her immediate family, Dorothy’s life was filled with loving memories of those who predeceased her: her father James Shelton; her mother Ada Shelton; her brother JP Shelton; her sisters Margie Hartford, Doris White, and Carrie Rains; and her son-in-law Cliff Mehler. Their lives were intertwined with hers, and their memories endure in the hearts of those still here.

Dorothy embraced the joys of everyday living. She delighted in shopping and appreciated the little pleasures of life. Her compassion extended to animals as well, especially her beloved little dog, Jenny, who provided unwavering companionship and affection.

Throughout her hundred years, Dorothy lived with purpose and conviction. She leaves behind not only a family who loved her deeply but also friends, neighbors, and a church community who will dearly miss her resolute spirit and her generous, loving heart.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens, located at 290 Goodman Rd E, Southaven, MS 38671. The funeral service will follow at the same location beginning at 11:00 AM.

Dorothy S. Hairston’s legacy of love, strength, and selflessness will remain an inspiring testament to a life well lived. As Dot, Meemaw, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she touched many lives—and the memories she leaves will be cherished forever.
