Geraldine Darlene Johnson

Geraldine Darlene Johnson-Engen, affectionately known as Geri, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 25, 2026, in Olive Branch, Mississippi, awaking in the arms of her Savior, Jesus. Born on March 19, 1937, in South Dakota, Geri's journey was one marked by devotion, adventure, and unwavering love for her family.

Geri was truly a woman of many gifts and passions. Her early years were dedicated to nurturing and guiding others as she taught school, igniting young minds and forming lifelong memories. She later channeled her compassion and discipline into work as a physical therapy assistant—a role she treasured deeply—and also served as a nurse. These vocations reflected her abiding desire to help, to heal, and to lift those around her.

As life unfolded, Geri found herself embracing new adventures. After marrying David E. Johnson, the two embarked on an entrepreneurial venture as contract painters. Their teamwork and love built a strong partnership until David’s passing. Undeterred by loss, Geri and her beloved sister Delores carried on the painting business, demonstrating her resilience and her commitment to family. Never one to let life grow stagnant, she next managed an apartment complex, offering warmth and assistance to all who passed through her doors.

Later years brought Geri a new chapter with Eugene E. Engen. Together, they traveled much of the world, building lasting memories and cherishing each journey side by side. These adventures with Gene were among her life’s brightest highlights, and she often spoke fondly of the experiences and the joy that traveling together brought her.

Above all else, Geri’s heart belonged to her family. She was outgoing and vibrant, finding happiness in living each day fully and in lifting those she loved. Nothing brought her greater pride than her daughter Teresa, for whom she was a devoted, loving mother and, in later years, a gentle caregiver. This depth of devotion extended to all her loved ones, as she continually sought to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or simply listen with kindness.

Geri is survived by her nieces and nephews including, LeRoy Scheurer, and her stepchildren April Davidson(Keith), Michael Engen (Barbara), Michelle Geer (Mark), Debbie Walston, and Lisa Johnson. Each held a special place in her heart, and she cherished the unique bond she shared with every one of them.

She now rejoins those she loved dearly and missed profoundly: her husbands, David E. Johnson and Eugene E. Engen; her precious daughter, Teresa Johnson; her parents, August Ann Mary Vilhauer; brothers Elyard, Calvin, Harold, Morris, and Paul Vilhauer; and her sisters Anna Scheurer, Rebecca Scheurer, Alma Vilhauer, Olga Rueb, Delores Curtis, and Luella Deutscher. Their spirits are united once again, held in the everlasting embrace of love and memory.

A visitation in honor of Geri’s life will be held on Saturdat, August 1, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., both at Abundant Grace Ministries, 9239 E. Holmes Rd., Collierville, TN 38017. A graveside service will take place on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 290 Goodman Road East, Southaven, MS 38671.

The memory of Geraldine Darlene Johnson is a bright legacy of warmth, service, and deep affection. Her laughter, her stories, her steadfast encouragement, and the endless love she so freely gave will be cherished and held close by all who knew her. As we say goodbye, we also say thank you—for her life, her example, and the enduring light she leaves in our hearts.
