It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Cecil Zachary, Sr., known as Cecil or Zack to those who were closest to him, departed this life on April 22, 2025, in Tunica, MS, after a lengthy illness. Born in Houlka, MS, Cecil was a cherished member of his community and will be remembered for his ever-jolly disposition and his love for storytelling and humor.

Cecil’s professional life was dedicated to working in auto and diesel mechanics. His skills and passion for working on semi-trucks, trailers, and automobiles were evident to all who knew him. A country boy at heart, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, from listening to old country music, especially the sounds of Johnny Cash, to watching old Western TV shows. He cherished the memories of his youth, frequently recalling the days spent racing horses and playing checkers with his father, brother Dwight, and sister Martha, along with the shared moments of listening to the radio together. He also fondly remembered his mother, who was a wonderful cook and always prepared delicious meals for the family.

His strong sense of duty was exemplified during his military service in the United States Navy, where he served stateside during the Vietnam War. This experience remained one of his proudest accomplishments, alongside spending time reminiscing with his children and grandchildren.

Cecil is survived by his loving family, including his sons, James C. Zachary, Jr. (Sheila), Paul Funderburk (Kathi), and Joseph Zachary (Amber); daughters, Elizabeth Ramsey (Dewey) and Diana Craddock (Dan); sister, Martha Owen; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. His legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of his family members and friends who will hold onto the many cherished memories made throughout his rich and fulfilling life.

He is reunited with his wife, Mary Louise (Bryan) Zachary, and his parents, Newton Ellis and Helen Annie Mae (Walls) Zachary. He also joins his six siblings, Syble Elane Zachary, Dr. Boyd Zachary, Reba Fay Anderson, Dorothy Mae Steele, Everett Leon Zachary, and Malcom Dwight Zachary. Additionally, he is preceded in death by one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
