Joe Harris

With heavy hearts and loving remembrance, we celebrate the life of Donald Joe Harris, affectionately known as “Joe,” who departed from this world on July 26, 2026, at Ashland Health and Rehab after a series of long illnesses. Born on Christmas Day in 1950 in Mississippi, Joe’s journey was marked by deep devotion to family, an enduring love for the land, and countless memories created in the embrace of nature and those he cherished most.

Joe’s childhood roots in Mississippi shaped his resilient spirit and honest character. Alongside his beloved wife, Sherri, whom he met at Westwood High School, he built a partnership that stood the test of time and formed the very foundation of his greatest joy—his family. Together, they nurtured a home filled with laughter, warmth, and steadfast love.

Joe embraced fatherhood with a heart full of pride, raising daughters Nichole Hamberlin, Ashley Harris, and April Carlisle. Each carries with them treasured memories of the man who was, quite simply, “the best Daddy.” Though the family mourns the loss of his daughter Elizabeth Sanders, they hold tightly to the legacy Joe built, now thriving in his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Cassidy Kolwyck, Alee Stewart, Colten Kirkman, Tyler Hughes, Eli Carlisle, Easton Carlisle Cooper Sanders, Brody Sanders, and Presleigh Hale were each blessed by Joe’s gentle presence. He took immense delight in riding his grandkids around on the 4 wheeler and sharing hunting trips, passing along his love of the outdoors to the next generation.

Donald Joe is survived by his brother, John Harris, in addition to an extended circle of family and friends whose lives he brightened with his wit, wisdom, and kindness. He was also preceded in death by his father L C Harris, his mother Cornelia Harris, and his sister Virginia Toliver. Their memories reunite now, leaving a space filled with gratitude for the years spent together.

Joe’s accomplishments were many. After proudly serving in the Army National Guard for six years—a chapter that began just after high school—Joe forged a successful career. He owned his own construction company for many years, leading with the integrity and hard work that defined him. Later, he brought these same traits to his role as a supervisor with Freeland and Lemm before retiring, but it was his family and his cherished land and home that stood as his proudest achievements.

Outside of work, Joe’s soul found peace in the quiet corners of woods, on hunting trips, and by the water’s edge during fishing trips in his younger days. He relished time spent at the hunting club, where his skill was legendary—he could shoot a quarter tossed in the air with a pistol, a testament to his remarkable aim, (and perhaps a bit of LUCK, although he would never admit that). Watching wildlife and being surrounded by nature brought him joy and contentment, whether he was quietly observing from his porch, or sharing stories about days gone by with those he loved.

Joe’s personality shone through in every facet of his life. With a quick wit, a healthy dose of sarcasm, and a calm, caring demeanor, he brought laughter, comfort, and wisdom to every conversation. His presence was both grounding and inspiring—he was a steady force, always offering guidance gleaned from a lifetime of experience. Those lucky enough to know him were touched by his unique blend of fun, wisdom, and profound kindness.

Visitation for Donald Joe Harris will be held on July 30, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, located at 290 Goodman Rd E, Southaven, MS 38671. A Celebration of Life will follow at 3:00 PM at the same location, where family and friends will come together to honor, remember, and reflect on the extraordinary journey of a man who meant so much to so many.

Joe leaves behind a legacy etched in love, laughter, and strength. Though he may have left this world, the wisdom, joy, and memories he created will live on through every story told, every lesson shared, and every moment remembered in the hearts of those who loved him.
