John Lynn Echols, Sr.

John Lynn Echols, Sr., age 82, of Southaven, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven.  He was born on May 15, 1941 to the late John E. “Red” and Edna (Parham) Echols.

John retired as a history teacher from Southaven High School where he was also a Student Council sponsor and was proud of his southern heritage.  He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Military Order of the Stars and Bars, a Mason from the Horn Lake Lodge #617, Sons of the Revolution, on the dual boards of directors for Beauvoir, Editor of Southern Comfort for over 45 years, and a member of the Mechanized Calvary for Sons of Confederate Veterans, member of the cannon crew for the War between The States Re-enactments and did living histories.  He was also a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, awarded the Silver Beaver, and was a 3 bead Woodbadger.  At age 44, he went to Old Miss where he received his bachelor degree in education.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Paul Maitland Echols and his sister, Anita Joyce Keel.

John will be remembered by his beloved wife of 60 years, Paula (Cantrell) Echols, son John L.  Echols, Jr. (Rita), grandchildren Stacey Dunn (Gabe), Justin Echols (Katie), and Jacob Echols (Ana-Katherine Hawkins), 10 great-grandchildren, Dalton Brown (20) (Lexi Ferzacca), Abby Dunn (18), Tori Brown (17), Kelsey Coffey (14), Deuce Dunn (14), Kinsley Echols (12), Dillon Dunn (10), Brycen Gainey (10), Haven Echols (1), and Remington Echols (8 months), and great-granddaughter Blakely Brown (1), several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his best friends, Alan Latimer, Randy Hailey, Grant Eckley, and Leroy Waller.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Glenn’s Chapel, 8235 Hwy 301, Lake Cormorant, MS 38641 from 11:00 am until the time of the service at 1:00 pm.  Burial will follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Memorial donations may be made to Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis Home, 2244 Beach Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39531.
