Jon Edward
McElhaney

The Carter Memorial Chapel at Twin Oaks Funeral Home
5:00 - 7:00 pm (Central time)
Jon Edward “Johnny” McElhaney brought light and laughter wherever he went. Born on July 28, 1970, in Memphis, Tennessee, he grew into a singular spirit—a man whose boundless energy, generosity, and humor left indelible marks on the lives around him. On June 24, 2026, in Southaven, Mississippi, after a valiant and enduring battle with heart failure, Jon’s vibrant journey came to a peaceful close.
Jon was the embodiment of fun—a sparkle in the room, a friend to all, and the “center of attention” in family gatherings, where his mischievous streak shone. Whether he was making noises to startle loved ones, donning a Santa suit at Christmas to delight the children, or pulling off an impromptu practical joke, Jon never missed a chance to inspire joy and laughter. His personality was often described as crazy, goofy, and downright silly; everyone loved being around him—drawn in by his wit and the way he could make anyone laugh, no matter the circumstance.
Jon’s early years in Memphis shaped his blend of theatrical flair and heartfelt compassion. He was, fittingly, an enthusiastic participant in high school drama, performing in plays and cultivating a deep love of music. That passion for creative expression would ripple into his adult life, making him the life of every gathering and a source of encouragement for those in need of a smile.
Professionally, Jon found his calling as a surgical tech for an ophthalmologist. He was proud of his work—a proudness matched by the esteem held for him by the doctors he worked with. He spent many years contributing to Dr. Meyers’ practice, where he became known for his expert skill, dependability, and heartfelt care for each patient. Traveling with doctors for work and participating in an externship with his sister not only enriched Jon’s professional path, but also granted him precious moments of fun and camaraderie with family. Above all, his workplace was an extension of the warmth and kindness he poured into every corner of his world.
Florida held a special chapter in Jon’s life. He delighted in beach days and the freedom that came with seaside living. It was there he experienced a spiritual awakening, met God, and began his journey of faith in local church communities. Guided by this deep-rooted purpose, Jon gave freely of himself—feeding the homeless and engaging in mission work that touched countless lives. Once again, he chose to bring warmth and comfort to those who needed it most.
A devoted dog lover, Jon’s home was filled with the joyful energy of his beloved Beagles—Preacher, Bishop, Deacon, and Padre—and his old, blind companion, Dirty Joe. His dogs were his children, a constant source of loyalty and unconditional love, sharing in his happiness and comforting him through trials.
Jon’s memory is forever cherished by his loving mother, Ida McElhaney; brother, Franky McElhaney; sister-in-law, Twila; sisters, Star Kell and Francita Neal; brothers-in-law, Jon Kell and Eric Neal; and dear friends Catherine Duff, Melissa Schuller, and Tanya Stang. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank McElhaney; his sister, Lisa McElhaney; and his nephew, Christopher Thomas. Each of these bonds tells the story of a man loved and admired, a brother and son, friend and prankster, whose heart was open and whose laughter was boundless.
On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, family and friends will gather at The Carter Memorial Chapel at Twin Oaks Funeral Home, 290 Goodman Road East, Southaven, MS 38671, to honor his life and legacy. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—a chance for all who knew Jon to share in the joy he brought and the memories he leaves behind.
In the tapestry of lives Jon McElhaney touched, his spirit weaves threads of fun and kindness, faith and devotion, laughter and love. Though gone, the echoes of his jokes, the warmth of his embrace, and the joy of his company will forever brighten the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
