Kathryn "Bunt" Garrett, a beloved educator, dedicated family member, and cherished friend, passed away on May 31, 2025, in Hernando, MS, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 20, 1934, in Arkansas, Kathryn was a beacon of light and warmth to all who knew her.
A proud educator, Kathryn began her teaching career at Horn Lake Elementary and later transitioned to Southaven Elementary, where she made an indelible mark on countless young minds. Her passion for helping children learn extended beyond the classroom as she eventually became the principal at Southaven Elementary. She was known for her caring, understanding, and easy-going nature, attributes that endeared her to students and colleagues alike. Kathryn had a remarkable ability to connect with children, always ensuring they felt valued and seen.
Those who knew Kathryn will fondly remember her fierce protectiveness over her family. She possessed an unwavering spirit — you could joke with her, and even tease her children; just don't mess with her grandchildren. Kathryn's love for her family was her proudest accomplishment. She took immense joy in attending her grandchildren's sports events and celebrating their achievements. Her grandchildren, Jacob (Shanan) Bledsoe, Jeremy (Shara) Bledsoe, and Madison "Madi" Garrett (Kevin Fletcher), brought her endless happiness, while her great-grandchildren, MaryAnn, Jada Kathryn (Spencer Lee), Jaxon Devon, Madalyn, Nora Gracyn, Katelyn Michelle, and Damon Fletcher, were the apples of her eye. Kathryn was a devoted and doting family matriarch, known for each loving moment she shared with them, which filled her heart with pride and joy.
Kathryn was also a kindred spirit to her fur-babies, Bailey, Nova, and Stella, who brought her great comfort and companionship. Whether it was camping, traveling with her husband, or enjoying quiet moments with her pets, she cherished the simple pleasures in life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Devon Garrett; her parents, Raymond and Addie McCoy; her brother, Lt. Col. Alvin Eugene McCoy; and her sister, Javene Liddell. Each of these individuals played an integral role in her life, and it is with their memories she now walks.
Kathryn Garrett's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Her home will forever echo with the laughter and lessons she imparted to those she adored.
