Maxine “Max, Nanny” Hutchins peacefully went to see the Lord and her beloved husband on July 13, 2026, in Southaven, Mississippi, surrounded by the family she so deeply cherished. Born on November 6, 1943, in Charleston, Mississippi, Maxine’s journey through life was defined by extraordinary love, steadfast faith, unshakeable dedication to her family, and an infectious joy that warmed every heart she touched.

From her earliest days, Maxine bloomed amid the strong roots of family. She was the treasured daughter of Wilton and Gladys Porter, and blessed with the warmth of siblings and extended family. Though she now reunites with her dear husband James E. Hutchins, her parents, and brother Billy Porter in Heaven, her legacy continues in the lives of those she leaves behind: her loving son Nicholas J. Hutchins; her grandsons Brandon, Jonathan, and Austin Hutchins; her devoted brother Marshall E. Porter, and caring aunt Marie Porter Freeman.Maxine’s journey took her from the familiar comforts of Charleston to the halls of Cosmetology School in Nashville, where she applied herself with her characteristic attention to detail and commitment. Beyond her studies, Maxine built a life as a hardworking homemaker and talented seamstress, taking pride in her craft both at home and working for a local cleaner. Her hands—steady and sure—could mend fabric, and hearts, too.

Music was the soul of Maxine’s days. As a wonderful singer and skilled pianist, she led and lent her voice to a singing group, inspiring many with her renditions. When her husband, James E. Hutchins, evangelized at churches across the region, Maxine was right alongside him, playing piano and singing the powerful hymn "Til the Storm Passes Over," touching countless congregations to tears. She did not just live her faith—she expressed it in every song, every meal lovingly cooked, every hand extended to help a neighbor or friend. She was the best pastor’s wife anyone could hope to have, volunteering wherever needed and always leading with compassion and grace. Later, her membership at Abundant Grace Church in Collierville, Tennessee, gave her countless opportunities to serve.

Maxine poured her love into her family. She is survived by her devoted son, Nicholas J. (Julie) Hutchins, who reflects her patience and generosity; and by her three grandsons—Brandon, Jonathan, and Austin Hutchins—for whom she was a constant presence of joy and support. Her brother, Marshall E. (Nancy) Porter, and her aunt, Marie Porter Freeman, and her beloved cat Cayce remain to treasure her memory, along with countless others whom she befriended throughout her life.

Her home was a haven alive with laughter and good food, especially during the holidays when her legendary cornbread dressing brought everyone to the table. Whether she was sewing, cooking, singing, playing piano, fishing, or simply gathering her loved ones together, Maxine’s generous heart shone through. She was patient and loving—a great mother, a doting “Nanny,” and a friend to all.

It is said that Maxine had a great sense of humor and a knack for making friends wherever she went. Her cheerful, strong-willed spirit and her boundless generosity endeared her to many. She gave freely of her time and energy, volunteering for anything at her church, always eager to do the Lord’s work. Every detail mattered to her, as did each person who crossed her path.

Maxine’s memory lives on through the stories, love, and laughter that will always dwell within those she held dear. As her family, friends, and the many whose lives she touched gather to honor her, they remember a woman of deep faith, devotion, and extraordinary kindness.
