Sybil Jane Hammond Dover, known affectionately to her family and friends as Sybil, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2026, in Southaven, Mississippi. She was born on July 20, 1943, in Humboldt, Tennessee, and throughout her 82 years touched the lives of so many with her determined spirit, fiery personality, and unwavering love for her family.
Sybil was a proud graduate of Humboldt High School. Her dedication and work ethic led her to a successful career in retail management, where she was respected for her leadership as well as her forthrightness—never shying away from speaking her mind. Sybil was known as an outgoing, sweet lady with a spark that could light up any room; those close to her would often describe her as a true firecracker who brought energy and honesty wherever she went.
Her Christian faith guided her life. Sybil believed in God, was saved, and devotedly attended Eudora Methodist Church. This faith sustained her through joys and sorrows, grounding her firmly in her values and beliefs.
Among her greatest accomplishments, Sybil was most proud of her family. She leaves behind a loving husband, Vernon Dover, who stood by her side through life’s many seasons. She is survived by her sons, Danny Hammond, Mark Hammond, and Jason Hammond; daughters-in-law, Tina Hammond and Danielle Hammond; her beloved grandchildren: Destiny, Ryan, Shawn, Logan, Joshua, Brandyn, Bryan, Blake, Becky, Brandon, Kimberly, and Katie; and great-granddaughter Roselyn. Her sister Yvonne Larkin and brother-in-law Bill Larkin, as well as her brothers Maylon and Abie Joe Buckingham, also carry her memory forward.
Sybil was preceded in death by her father, Joe Maylon Buckingham, and mother, Reba Shirley. She joins in rest her first husband, Pete Hammond; her daughters Lisa Marie Hammond and Tina Grimes; her grandchild Justyn Lane; her sister Pat Treece.
Family was Sybil's deepest joy and proudest accomplishment. She was remembered as a good mom—steadfast, caring, and ever-present in the lives of those she loved. Her family’s stories are full of laughter about her attempts (often unsuccessful) at growing flowers, and the abundant love she had for her loyal puppy dog, Dallas. Her honesty, determination, and loving nature made every gathering brighter.
Beyond her work and faith, Sybil enjoyed simple pleasures and spending time at the casino. Through all of life’s changes, her outgoing character, warmth, and sense of fun never wavered.
Visitation to celebrate Sybil’s life will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Monday, July 6, 2026, at The Carter Memorial Chapel at Twin Oaks Funeral Home, 290 Goodman Road East, Southaven, MS. Funeral services will follow on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM at the same location.
Sybil Jane Hammond Dover’s legacy of love, honesty, and devotion lives on in all those blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
