Thomas Nathaniel Barksdale, III

Mar 21, 1953 — Jun 25, 2026

Hernando, MS

With profound sorrow and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we remember Thomas Nathaniel Barksdale, III—fondly known as Tom—who departed from us on June 25, 2026, in Hernando, Mississippi, after a long illness, surrounded by family. Born on March 21, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee, Tom’s journey was graced by love, resilience, and an irrepressible joy that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Tom spent his formative years in the embrace of a close-knit family, guided by the steadfast love of his late parents, Thomas and Sue Barksdale. He carried this legacy forward, building a life defined by devotion, laughter, and camaraderie. Tom was a happy man—a sentiment echoed by all who had the privilege to spend time in his company. His innate ability to connect, whether with adults or children, was perhaps most evident in his special bond with his grandchildren, whom he taught to swim, fostering memories that will ripple through generations.

A craftsman at heart and by hand, Tom’s talents were as practical as they were passionate. He was an excellent builder, with a meticulous eye for detail and a creative spirit. The home that he and his beloved wife, Debra, built together was a testament not only to their shared vision but also to the skill and dedication he poured into every project. The oak doors within—crafted from a tree cut down and processed with his cousin—stand as enduring symbols of familial collaboration and enduring artistry. Whether it was finishing out upgrades with Debra, building the deck at home with perfection, or keeping his tractor and farm equipment in impeccable condition, Tom’s handiwork was everywhere, always reflecting his pride in his property and his unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Tom’s zest for life found further expression in his hobbies and pastimes. He delighted in the open road, riding his Harley on countless trips with Debra, and relished a memorable weeklong road trip with his brother—adventures that will long be cherished among stories told and retold. A lover of action movies playing on an ever-growing television, Tom knew how to fully enjoy his leisure. His grill was often alight, hosting gatherings where he reigned as barbecue and grill master, infusing every meal with flavor and delight.

Professionally, Tom retired from Estes Express, where he was a dedicated over-the-road truck driver. His career was notable not only for the miles he traversed but for the friendships he forged, relationships that stood the test of time—a testament to his warmth and integrity.

Tom’s love extended to all living things; he held a special affection for children and animals. Ever resourceful, he was known to get old Chevy pickup trucks and tinker with them, just as he nurtured and repaired what mattered most in life: connections, memories, and the very foundations of home.

Tom’s proudest accomplishments were not measured in miles driven or projects completed but in the family he cherished, the home built with loving hands, and the property maintained with pride. These were his deepest joys, his enduring legacies.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Debra Barksdale; his children, Tommy (Suzanne) Barksdale, IV, Chris Barksdale, Karen Wilkerson, Linda Stull, and Jamie (Trevor) Adams; his siblings, Laura (Paul) Palumbo, Don (Betsy) Barksdale, Susan (Scott) Plunkett, and Cannon (Mariann) Barksdale. He is warmly remembered as well by a wide circle of grandchildren, who were the light of his later years. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas N. Barksdale, Jr.; his mother, Sue Barksdale; and his sister, Martha Linn.

Tom’s presence—his big smile, his craftsmanship, his warmth—will be greatly missed yet forever celebrated. As we gather our memories, we honor a man whose life was a mosaic of hard work, adventure, boundless affection, and enduring connection. May his journey onward be as peaceful and filled with love as the life he so generously shared with all of us.
