Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home
2:00 - 4:00 pm (Central time)
Thomas Allen Zimmerman, known affectionately as Tom, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, in Southaven, Mississippi, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 21, 1945, in Mankato, Minnesota, Tom's life was a richly woven tapestry of innovation, devoted family love, and unwavering faith.
Tom was a man of remarkable talents and pioneering spirit. His early career was marked by groundbreaking achievements when, while working at E.F. Johnson, he developed the first CB radio—a testament to his ingenuity and passion for communication technology. His formidable expertise as an electrical engineer blossomed further at Litton Microwaves, where he earned several patents, showcasing his dedication to advancing the field. Later, as a CADD designer at Thomas & Betts, Tom’s inventive mind shone brightly through the development and patenting of innovative sports lighting solutions, notably including the stadium lights gracing the Memphis Redbirds Stadium—a lasting legacy seen and admired by many.
Educated in USAAMS Communications Electronic Equipment Repair, Tom served with honor as a US Army Vietnam Veteran in 1967. His military decorations, including the National Service Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Sharp Shooter Rifle Medal, and Good Conduct Medal, attest to his courage and commitment. His training in radio and electronics formed the foundation for his professional pursuits, which he carried with great pride.
Beyond his professional life, Tom was a humble man whose heart belonged foremost to those he loved. A devoted family man, his greatest pride was his family: his cherished wife Judy Zimmerman, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage and a deep bond strengthened by four decades as active members of East Win Christian Church. Together, they served as elders and pillars of faith and community. Tom’s legacy lives on vibrantly through his children—Mollie (Tim) VanderHook, Mark (Jenn) Zimmerman, and Mandie (Nic) Zimmerman-Porto—his treasured grandchildren Kayla (Connall) Wooldridge, Haley (Andrew) Morgan, Leah Zimmerman, Alexandra Porto, Collin Porto, Bryce VanderHook, Timmy VanderHook, and Collin VanderHook, and his beloved great-grandchildren Blakely Wooldridge, Hendrix Morgan, and Hunter Wooldridge. As well as a host of other family and friends.
Tom’s love for the outdoors was infectious. He was an avid Minnesota hunter and fisherman, cherishing peaceful walks around the lake alongside his dogs and a steadfast fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. His gentle nature extended to all creatures, and his home was a sanctuary for pets, reflecting his encompassing love for life. His enjoyment of community extended through spirited participation in his church bowling and softball teams, moving ministries, and church security efforts, embodying a life of service and involvement.
His spirit of hospitality and love will be deeply missed by his sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Steve Eccles, and he carries forth the memory of those dear to him who departed before: his parents Chet and Myrtle Zimmerman, step-mother Lil Zimmerman, siblings Bobby Zimmerman, Gene (Pat) Zimmerman, Herb (Mary) Zimmerman, Roger (Pat) Zimmerman, and Gary (Char) Zimmerman, and his beloved dog Jack.
The legacy of Tom Zimmerman is one carved in the firm rock of family, faith, and innovation. His life was a radiant example of devotion—to his loved ones, to his country, and to his craft. His kindness, pioneering mind, and gentle strength echo in every life he touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Tom’s extraordinary journey will be held on June 20, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 290 Goodman Road East, Southaven, Mississippi. Friends and family are invited to gather and honor a life so profoundly lived.
As we remember Tom, we hold close the warmth of his laughter, the quiet patience of his presence, and the steadfast light of his love—each a beacon to guide us forward. His story, etched in the hearts of those privileged to know him, is a mighty call to live fully, love generously, and dream boldly.
