Vernell Johnson Shugart

Vernell J.  Shugart, of Olive Branch, MS, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025.

Known affectionately as "Nell", she was born to Herman and Bethel (DeHaven) Johnson in January 1933.  In 1951, Nell married her high school sweetheart, Robert "Bob" Shugart, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage.

Nell had a natural flair for interior design, a passion for antiques, and an enduring love of fashion.  She made lifelong friendships in Indianapolis, IN, Nashville, TN, and Olive Branch, MS.  She and Bob also became avid gardeners and enjoyed peaceful nature walks at Radnor Lake in Brentwood, TN.

Nell was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She found great joy in every picture, video, and story shared about her great-grandchildren, and she treasured the time spent with family.

Nell is preceded in death by her belove husband, Bob Shugart; her parents, Herman and Bethel Johnson; and her brother, Tandy Johnson.

Nell is survived by her children:  Robert Greg Shugart, Michael Kim (Jane) Shugart, and Nikki (James) Taylor; grandchildren Shelli (Aaron) Semiklose, Stephen (Michelle) Shugart, Shaun (Lauren) Shugart, Chad (Jacki) Shugart, and Justin (Amy) Shugart; her cherished great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held later this fall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to LeBonheur Children's Hospital (Memphis, TN, the ASPCA, or a chairity of your choice.

Nell's grace, kindness, and warmth will remain in our hearts forever.
