William Joseph Spence Jr., affectionately known as Joe, departed this world on July 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy etched in the hearts of many. Born on October 9, 1953, in Texas, Joe's journey took him through the expansive skies of aviation engineering, where he dedicated more than 40 years of his life, embodying a steadfast commitment to his craft and profession.
His personality was richly complex, marked by a blend of honesty and a profound sense of pride. You could always count on Joe to speak his mind, ensuring those around him knew exactly where they stood, often through his blunt yet caring demeanor. He was as stubborn as he was soft-hearted, a juxtaposition that endeared him to his loved ones.
Joe’s spirit thrived in nature, where he indulged in his passions as an avid hunter and camper. The tranquil beauty of the lake held a special place in his heart, where countless memories were woven into the fabric of family time. He reveled in boat rides, flipping the boys into the water, four-wheeler adventures, and jubilantly attending each of his grandchildren's birthday parties, transforming moments into cherished family traditions.
Though he has left this earthly plane, Joe's proudest accomplishments will forever resonate through the lives of his children: William Shide Spence and Kimberly, Joseph Heath Spence, Deborah Nicole Spence and Kristin, Tina Hudspeth and Brian, and April Harper and Richard. His legacy is further carried on by his adoring grandchildren: Christopher Spence, Dalton Cook and Jessica, Dallas Perry and Kelsey, Dacota Perry and Mekayla, Josh Spence, Joe Spence, Austin Spence, and Delilah Spence, as well as his great-grandchildren: Dillon, Paislee, Dawson, Carter, Lucas, Alyssa, Karson, and Layla. Each of them is a testament to the love, values, and strength that he imparted.
Joe’s departure marks not just the loss of a beloved figure, but also the absence of a devoted husband, as he was predeceased by his dear wife, Rachel Spence, a bond that endures in memory and spirit. He is also survived by his siblings Joyce Shrum and Tom, Spring Grissom, and Jimmy Spence and Debbie. His departure is deeply felt by these living relatives as they navigate a world in which his presence will be profoundly missed.
As friends and family prepare to honor Joe’s life, they will gather at The Carter Memorial Chapel at Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven, Mississippi. A viewing will take place on July 14, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM and a burial at Autumn Woods Memorial Park in Olive Branch later that day at 3:00 PM.
In the chorus of life, Joe Spence sang a heartfelt tune, characterized by the laughter of children, the beckoning of the wild, and the honest words that held truth. His legacy will continue to echo in the stories told across generations, in the rustling leaves, and the sounds of laughter by the lake—memories that shall not fade, but rather blossom anew in the hearts he touched.
