Henry Murry Beaty Jr. January 22, 1926 - August 20, 2015

Henry Murry Beaty Jr., 89, retired attorney, passed away on August 20, 2015.

The only child of Henry M. Beaty and Tommye Roane Beaty, he graduated from Central High School, Memphis, class of 1944, and joined the Army Air Corps Cadet program that same year. He served as an aerial gunner and saw combat on B-29’s over Japan until Japan’s surrender. He received two air medals and attained the rank of sergeant at age 19.

After the war, he attended Memphis State College, Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) and received two law degrees from Vanderbilt University Law School, Class of 1951.  He practiced law in Memphis for more than 40 years, retiring in 1992. He served as a Special Judge in the Courts of Shelby County, received the Sam A. Meyer award in 1963, and he also served as city attorney for Germantown. He was a member of the Shelby County Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

He was a lifelong Episcopalian, served on the vestry of Grace St. Luke’s Church in Memphis, and, at the time of his death, was a member of St. George’s in Germantown, TN.  He was a member of the B-29 Club of Memphis.  He is survived by four children, Patricia Shapella of Lambertville, NJ, Henry Murry Beaty III, of Olive Branch, MS, Paul Harvill Beaty, of Memphis, and Dorothy DiPasquale of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and several grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion Carole Nellums.

He will be buried with military honors on Friday, Aug. 28, 11:30 a.m. at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill-Irene Road, Memphis, TN.  Arrangements are by Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, Southaven, MS.  Donations may be made to the Forever Young Senior Veterans,Collierville, TN.
