Roma Lee Thorn Jr.

May 22, 1925 — January 30, 2020

Roma Lee Thorn, Jr., 94, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020 at his home in Southaven, Mississippi.  The family will receive friends at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Monday, February 3, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow immediately after with burial in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.

He was a part of

The Greatest Generation

having served in the greatest Navy in the world during World War II.

Dr. Thorn was active in his community. Because of his love of history, he became involved with the Historic Desoto Foundation and Desoto Museum where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for many years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce and visited regularly sharing his knowledge of the beginnings of the city and the Chamber.

He also was Past Chairman of the Desoto County Republican Party and a member of the Southaven Commercial and Industrial Development Committee.  As a member of the Southaven Rotary Club, he was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow Award and also recognized for 38 years of perfect attendance.

Dr. Thorn was a long-time member of Carriage Hills Baptist Church in Southaven.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 73 years LaVerne Thorn; two children Susan Sugg (Samuel) of Southaven, Mississippi and Eric Thorn (Vickie) of Pensacola, Florida; four grandchildren, Lindsey Sugg and Samantha Sugg both of Southaven, Mississippi , Eric Thorn Jr. of San Antonio, Texas and David Thorn (Lindsay) of Orlando, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Olivia, Cooper and Hunter Thorn; and a sister, Gertrude Bechel of Kampsville, Illinois

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Carriage Hills Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi.
The family will receive friends at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Monday, February 3, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow immediately after with burial in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.
